New deadline is Wednesday, Aug. 15

The filing period for non-incumbents for the office of Councilmember in the City of Irvine has been extended, the City Clerk announced today. Interested residents must file nomination papers for the General Municipal Election by the new deadline, Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2018, during normal business hours (7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.).

The filing period was extended beyond the initial Aug. 10, 2018, deadline because one or more incumbents failed to file nomination papers. The filing period for incumbents is now closed.

Grab your swimsuit and enjoy recreational swimming with family while the movie Secret Life of Pets plays on the big screen during the City of Irvine’s Splash-In Movie & Recreation Swim on Saturday, Aug. 25, at William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center. The family-friendly summer outing kicks off with swimming at 6:30 p.m.; movie starts at dusk.

The recreation swim fee is $2 per child and $4 per adult. No registration is required and all fees are due at the pool. Lifeguards will be on duty.

The Irvine Police Department and the Orange County Fire Authority are teaming up to educate residents about the risks of wildfire. The first step is to sign up at AlertOC.org (Open in new window).

The Irvine Police Department’s Office of Emergency Management is partnering with the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) on a Wildfire Preparedness campaign that kicked off Tuesday. The outreach focuses on the “Ready, Set, Go” strategy championed by OCFA. Irvine neighborhoods that are most at risk of wildfire will be targeted, including Turtle Rock, Shady Canyon, Quail Hill, Orchard Hills and Portola Springs.

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office is investigating sober living home fraud and misuse of health insurance funds countywide. District Attorney Tony Rackauckas has said that he is using existing legislation and awaiting new legislation to clamp down on sober living crimes which, as a byproduct, he says leads to local homelessness.

Support animals in need while enjoying a comedic night out on the town at the third annual Comedy Unleashed fundraiser Tuesday, Sept. 18, at Irvine Improv. Guests will be treated to dinner and a show featuring comedians Gary Cannon, Patrick Keane, and Taylor Tomlinson. Nearly half the proceeds go toward the Irvine Animal Care Center.

Irvine homeowners who need to make critical repairs to their homes may qualify to receive financial assistance up to $25,000 through the City of Irvine’s Residential Rehabilitation Program. The Program offers three percent interest-deferred loans and emergency grants to assist low income homeowners with health and safety, building code, and accessibility related repairs.
