The City of Irvine has been ranked the eighth-greenest city in America by personal finance website WalletHub.
WalletHub compared the 100 largest cities in the United States across 28 key indicators related to environmental friendliness and sustainability. The study evaluated factors including greenhouse gas emissions, air and water quality, green space, transportation, energy sources, and green job opportunities.
Irvine’s ranking reflects its commitment to sustainable practices, environmental stewardship, and infrastructure that provides residents with more opportunities to make environmentally conscious choices.
The City continues to advance sustainability through a variety of programs and initiatives, including:
Expanding Transportation Options
Irvine CONNECT provides free shuttle rides every day, encouraging shared transportation and helping reduce vehicle trips. The Irvine Mobility Bike Share Pilot Program, featuring 20 pedal‑assist bicycles and two docking stations, makes it easier for community members to take advantage of the City's extensive trail network made up of hundreds of miles of on-street and off-street bike trails.
Cleaner Landscaping Equipment
The final phase of the City's gas-powered lawn equipment ban went into effect earlier this year. Ordinance No. 23-25, approved by the City Council in 2023, supports Irvine's ongoing efforts to reduce noise pollution and carbon emissions while promoting a cleaner, more sustainable community. It also aligns with the State's ban on the sale of new gas-powered small off-road engine (SORE) equipment.
Growing Irvine’s Urban Forest
Through its Urban Forestry program, the City aims to plant 500,000 trees and achieve 30% tree canopy coverage by 2055, supporting a greener community and long-term environmental benefits.
The City remains focused on advancing environmental initiatives, expanding sustainable transportation options, and preserving the natural resources that contribute to a healthy and vibrant community.
