City’s non-toxic Effort – Farm Bill Changed to Protect Cities

Under Mayor Pro Tem Christina Shea’s leadership, the City Council’s Organic Pesticide Use policy has now been successful for more than two years, setting a national standard. The City Council has opposed Congress’s Farm Bill section 9101 that would likely have pre-empted cities’ abilities to adopt their own pesticide regulations. In December 2018, under pressure from cities such as Irvine, that section was removed to protect local rights to control pesticide use. Efforts to get to this point are reflected in the links, below.

Great Park Balloon 'Jack' Installation

Watch as the iconic Orange County Great Park Balloon is transformed into a jack-o-lantern face on Tuesday, October 2. Balloon pilots are lifted by a large crane to attach black vinyl tarp pieces to the Balloon’s sides, creating a jack-o-lantern face affectionately known as “Jack.” There is no cost to watch the Balloon’s transformation, and guests are welcome to enjoy other Great Park amenities open that day, including the Farm + Food Lab and lawn areas. The transformation is scheduled for 9–11 a.m., but could be delayed to the evening if winds are too strong.

Irvine Named Best City to Live In

The City of Irvine has been voted “Best City to Live in” for the third consecutive year by Orange County Register readers.

Irvine’s commitment to safety, its unparalleled parks and open space, and quality of education helped it maintain its status as the best place to live in Orange County. Register readers select the best categories, so this is particularly important in that so many community members took the time to choose Irvine as No. 1.
